Fisher were held to a second successive goalless draw on a bitterly cold afternoon in Ashford, as Kennington’s stubborn rearguard action held them at bay. Despite dominating the game for large periods Fisher ended up fortunate to take even a point when a late penalty for the hosts was blazed over the bar. Fisher welcomed the return of Courtney Barrington after missing the last two games with injury but were without the creative artistry of Charles Yiadom-Konadu, which was a telling factor in their inability to unlock the Kennington defence.
Fisher were quickly on top and with their first meaningful attack hit the woodwork, as a deep freekick was only half cleared by the keeper’s punch and the ball falling to Kyrique Garvey Williams, who rifled back a low shot on the half volley which struck the base of the upright with Mant in the Kennington goal looking beaten. Fisher continued to make the early running and a low cross from Lovell looked to have been turned in at the near post by Jacob Katonia from close range, but Mant stuck out a leg to save well and deny Fisher an opener. At the other end Kennington were struggling to find a sight of goal despite the eager running of their quick forwards, Singh and Dent, and keeper Isaac Ogunseri was only required to watch a few long range efforts sail over his bar.
Fisher then switched their attack to left and a good passing move almost put Clarke in on goal but Mant was quick to block, before in a similar move Barrington was sent clear into he box but Mant again saved well as the ten goal winger tried to push the ball wide of him. Katonia and Barrington then both saw long range efforts fly over. Jack Gibbons was next to go close as following a quickly taken short corner he was allowed to make his way into the box, but his powerful struck curling effort landed on the roof of the net, and it was frustrated looking side who left the pitch at half time with all their attacking effort and dominance providing no reward.
The second half saw Kennington push forward a little more and Ogunseri handled a couple of low shots well as the game opened up. Jake Lovell found space to send in an effort as Fisher relaunched their assault on the Kennington goal, but as so often in the first half, the chance went over. Fisher continued to attack seeing several shots charged down and some teasing balls into the area did not find a Fisher player, but with every passing minute their play became more frantic as they searched for an opening when a calmer more measured approach to building up attacks may have been more profitable. This was not helped by a series of substitutions, which whilst welcoming back Tyron Mbuenimo after a long injury lay off did make the play more disjointed as players swapped positions all too regularly.
Kennington seemed to sense an opportunity amidst Fisher’s ever increasing frustration and pushed on themselves in the last ten minutes, with Singh a growing threat. A point on the road is always a worthwhile prize but Fisher nearly threw that away when with two minutes of normal time remaining some sloppy play down the left allowed a Kennington forward to get into the box on the wrong side of Vigneswaran and, as he fell to the ground, a rather soft looking penalty was awarded. Fortunately for Fisher, after some hesitation as to who was taking the kick for the hosts the ball was blasted well over Ogunseri’s cross bar with the same player then spurning a great chance to amend for his error two minutes later as he wriggled in from the left but shot into the side netting as team mates were queuing up to turn the ball home had he cut it back.
Fisher tried to rally in added time and went back on the attack, but time was not their friend and the referee brought an end to a frustrating afternoon, despite the point from the draw taking Fisher temporarily into second spot in the league. Only the final table in May will tell if this was valuable point gained or two vital points dropped.
