A record league crowd of 423 squeezed into St Paul’s to witness Fisher put up a spirited performance against title favourites Faversham Town, with the game only settled very late on as Fisher were caught at the back when pressing hard for an equaliser deep in stoppage time.
Manager Ajay Ashanike opted for a back three with wing backs to try and unsettle their heavily bank rolled opponents with Billy Brown dropping into the back three. It was a move that paid off in the early stages as Fisher made a fast start pushing Faversham back with both wing backs, Jack Gibbons and Ed Sata seeing plenty of ball.
Just short of the quarter of an hour mark, Fisher went in front. Good work down the right from Gibbons saw the ball tucked inside for Teddy Jones and he drew his marker before slipping the ball wider for Courtney Barrington, who rode Newman’s tackle before stabbing the ball past Jacon Rusell in the Faversham goal for his eighth goal of the season. Fisher almost repeated the trick five minutes later, but this time they slipped the ball wider to find Ed Sata on the left of the box, but his shot was charged down.
Both sides then exchanged powerful shots from the edge of the box that both flew over the bar, as Faversham started to get to grips with Fisher’s formation and dropped their back line a little deeper to deny Fisher the space to run in behind. A good move from the visitors down the right saw a dangerous cross from the lively Nathan Wood just evade the forwards in the box, but two minutes before the break a similar move saw the visitors level as Wood again found space down the right with a clever interchange of passes and his deep cross found Tashi-Jay Kwayie at the back post to head powerfully home from close range, sending the sides into the break level.
The second half again saw Fisher start the stronger, but unable to find any breaches in a strong Faversham back line, led by Rotherhithe born Ben Gorham. Visiting keeper Russell was then cautioned for handling outside his area as he slid out to stop Jake Lovell advancing down the right channel, with the free kick blocked by the wall. Substitute Halim Bakre then saw a powerful run into the box stopped by Russell sliding at his feet, with the keeper looking relieved as the referee waved away Fisher’s claims for a penalty that would have surely seen a second yellow if given.
With Fisher playing some pleasing football, aided by the introduction of Charles Yiadom-Konadu, they were hit by a sucker punch with fifteen minutes to go. A pinpoint free kick deep into the Fisher box was met by a well-timed run and jump by Matt Newman and his powerful header flew back across the into the far corner for a goal of simplistic quality that the Fisher defence could do little about.
Fisher tried hard to get back on level terms. Jack Gibbons saw a powerful strike beaten away by a diving Russell and Salim Nassor shot over from distance as Fisher knocked on the door with time running out. However, throwing caution to the wind late on with five up front, Fisher were caught out, deep into stoppage time, as substitute Draycott held up a thumped clearance well and slipped in Tashi-Jay Kwayie to score his second and wrap up the points in the process with virtually the last kick of the game.
The large crowd had seen a good quality game, with Faversham needing to show all their title credentials to overcome a valiant performance from the Fish, who now have two week break from league action as the Kent Senior Trophy takes centre stage next week with a visit to St Paul’s from Corinthian.
