Fisher returned to fourth spot in the Premier Division table with a comfortable two nil victory over struggling Snodland Town, as the play-off race starts to reach an exciting finale. Fisher knew only a win would do in their quest for promotion and were able to put out a strong squad for the vital clash, despite the absence of AJ Martin, resting a troublesome ankle, replaced by Tyron Mbuenimo. There was a place on the bench for returnee Michael Sarpong, after a spell away at Sutton Common Rovers and Sevenoaks Town.
Fisher looked nervous in the opening exchanges, which saw Snodland have more the ball, with sweeping forward passes from their veteran Ryan Hayes forcing Fisher back into their own half. But on twelve minutes, Fisher finally gelled and some good midfield play saw the ball fed out to Jake Lovell on the right wing. He burst past Snodland’s left back and reaching the byline fizzed over a powerful low cross that deflected off two defenders, under close attention from Kesna Clarke, before settling into the back of the net via the inside the far post to give Fisher the lead.
The goal settled Fisher down and they continued to push the ball around well, with Flavio Jumo and Salim Nassor dominating the midfield battle, quickly getting the ball out to wide areas where wingers Courtney Barrington and Jake Lovell were a constant threat. On several occasions Barrington wormed his way in from the left touchline, but the ball into the box was smuggled away by the Snodland defence. Lovell also went close when firing a shot over the bar after his own corner had been half cleared back to him.
The main danger to Fisher seemed to be complacency and a slip at the back when Isaac Ogunseri dallied in clearing, saw him forced to make a good save low at his left hand post to redeem himself, after his charged down clearance was recycled to set up a shooting chance. This led to spell of visitors’ pressure and several corners as Fisher ended the half on defensive duty.
The second half quickly saw Fisher take control of the game. Inside five minutes of the restart they had doubled their lead. A good exchange of passes in midfield saw the ball set for Jack Gibbons and he clipped to ball into the channel between centre and left full back. Whilst the centre back looked far closer to the ball his hesitation saw Kesna Clarke race beyond him and taking the ball into the corner of the penalty area he then drove it low across the keeper and into the net for a classic centre forward’s goal.
With a two goal lead Fisher were now able to rest some tiring legs for the run in, with the strength on the bench not affecting their pattern of play at all. Charles Yiadom Konadu came on for a cameo appearance quickly forcing a low save from the keeper from an effort outside the box and then watched a powerful drive, after he twisted and turned away from two defenders, drift just past the outside of the post. Fellow substitute Daniel Flemming also went close when a fast counterattack saw the ball spread to the left hand channel of the penalty area where his looping header, as he ran onto the bouncing ball, was just clutched by the keeper under the crossbar.
Snodland rallied late on, desperate to get something out of the game and in the closing stages almost pulled a goal back, as a low shot came back off the base of the post, before skipper Jack Gibbons pounced to clear the rebound with a Snodland and forward looking set to convert. It was a case of too little too late from the visitors though as Fisher had already done plenty to ease through the game and pick up a vital three points.
A crucial midweek trip to Tunbridge Wells now awaits for Fisher, with just four league games left for them to stay in the playoff race, with four teams battling it out for the remaining three places.
