Gary – we just couldn’t keep that effort up for 90 minutes. Fisher 3 – 3 Corinthian 3

It was very much a game of two halves for the Fish against Corinthian on Saturday, with the home side racing into a 3-0 lead before the break only to be pegged back by a very strong Hoops side. Gary Abbott left the game understandably frustrated that his side couldn’t hold on for all three points, but retaining their unbeaten record against a side who will challenge for honours this season, he was upbeat overall.

“I’ve got to say in the first half the boys worked so hard to stop them playing and we justly got our rewards. We played some great football, lots of positive movement and scoring 3 goals. They got out there and played the way we want to, moving the ball and working hard, which paid of. At half-time I just said go out and do exactly the same, but to work that hard for 90 mins, no one can do that. We kept the intensity up for the first 25 minutes, but then they scored their 1st goal.”

“After that you try not to drop off but it always happens; the second goal then came along and the equaliser was disappointing because we never kept our line together. When one player drops further than the other that’s a problem and it showed as the goal came from it. On reflection I can see that we are building and I would have taken a draw at the start, Corinthian are a good side and they will be up there at the end of the season.”

Fisher opened the scoring after 14 minutes with a third of the season for man of the moment Trey Williams, bagging in his second consecutive game. Abbo continues to be impressed by the front man – “What can I say? I said Trey will score 20/25 this season and that showed again yesterday. If we give him the service he wants I’m sure that will happen; he did go through one v one at 3-0, and if he scores that then I think we definitely win the game.”

Gary was also impressed by the input shown by the other two goals scorers, with Scott Wason getting his first in black and white on 28 minutes, and programme cover star Tyrell McLeod-Bentley adding the third just three minutes later. “Scott gives you so much up top, he is big strong and can drop deep and score goals so hopefully there’s more to come from him. As for Tyrell, I’ve been so pleased with him, he works so hard going back and forward and will chip in with a few goals.”

There is no rest for Gary and the team, as thoughts shift very swiftly to the South East London Derby on Bank Holiday Monday away at Beckenham Town. “Beckenham is our Derby, so I think that will take care of itself, but I believe in this team and the boys believe if we put the same effort and desire as we did on Saturday then we have a great chance of winning and get our first 3 points. We obviously want to get the points on the board, but also get the first win for the fans, and where better to do it than at our closest rivals? All managers say this but we should be on 7 points by now but we ain’t, so we got to make sure we tighten up at the back in the last 5/10 mins, but it will all fall into place. We’re all looking forward to Monday and want to get the result the supporters are looking for.”
