A wet St Pauls witnessed Fisher’s final preseason fixture that saw the Fish fall to a 3-1 defeat in a scrappy but competitive game.
Manager Ajay Ashanike took the opportunity to give all available players run out and this perhaps contributed to a lack of fluency seen in the previous games. Fisher were not aided by injuries to their central defenders that saw them rested meaning a trialist was drafted in to pay at the heart of the back four alongside usual wide player Jamie Brown, with Darnelle Bailey King ending the game filling in at left back.
The first half saw lots of endeavour but little quality in a physical contest with Fisher failing to find a final ball when in promising positions and Barking putting the Fisher goal under a lot of pressure without really making a clear cut opening. Eniye Amgaduba drew a good save from the Barking keeper with an early chance and Sam Amedu saved well from Barking’s first effort ten minutes later. Despite these early chances the game looed set to go into he half time break still goalless until alate free kick on the stroke of half time was centred in the Fisher box. Amedu came and punched by did not get sufficient contact and the ball glanced off his gloves a fell kindly to a Barking forward at the back of the area who slotted on the volley past Conor Darwish trying to cover on the line.
The second half saw Fisher make a poor start and an early one on one for the visitors was saved well low down by Amedu, when the striker looked set to score, However, from the result corner the ball was glanced into the far corner and Fisher fell two behind.
Changes off the bench improved Fisher’s attacking intent with Bailey-Kin, Kyron Cooper and Tobi Irefin adding some pace up top. Irefin almost made his own opening with a mazy run, but his shot found the keepers gloves.
Barking’s third came from dreadful injury to Yousaf Mohamed who in playing the ball out from the back as last man, twisted and crumpled with his knee seeming to give way on him with no one around him, leaving a Barking forward to run onto the loose ball by his side and tuck the ball into the net. We wish Yousaf, who was stretchered off and taken straight to hospital a speedy recovery from what looked an awful injury.
Three down there was little way back into the game but a late rally saw Kyron Cooper confidently slip the ball past the Barking keeper after he was threaded in by Irefin’s well-judged through ball to reduce the arrears, but it was a case of too little to late for the Fish.
