Fisher’s unbeaten run in preseason came to an end by the odd goal in three, in a closely fought game under the lights at St Pauls against Hullbridge Sports of the Essex Senior League.
Both sides have had good pre seasons so far and put out strong elevens as they looked to bed down their squads, with Fisher only having two unsigned players in their match day squad. Their were returns for Tyron Mbuenimo and Jospeh Adewunmi after recent trials at Blackburn and Chelmsford respectively.
The game started at good pace, with Hullbridge’s long through causing some problems for Fisher and Fisher’s pace on the wings doing likewise for the visitors. However the final ball form the Fisher wide men was not quite in sync with forwards runs despite getting into some promising positions and at the other end the calmness of Liam Wilson and power of Adewunmi helped quell Hullbridge’s aerial assaults.
Hullbridge came close to opening the scoring shortly before the half hour mark, but Luke Thomas was well placed to head away off the line. Two minutes later though the opening goal did arrive. Having received an accidental blow to the face Joseph Adewunmi was off the field getting treatment and his presence was sorely missed as the ball flew around the Fisher area with Sam Amedu making a great save only to see the rebound fired back at him and agonisingly spin off his second block into the net.
Both sides looked to attack as the half came to and close but there was no further scoring and so Fisher trailed at the break by a single goal.
Fisher were quickly out the blocks in the second spell and just six minutes in had got back on level terms. Joseph Koroma’s pacy run down the right flank saw him pull the ball back and found Eniye Amgbaduba arriving on the edge of the box to drive the ball into the net.
Fisher then introduced triallist Errol Mundle who showed some impressive touches and with Jojo Kinzonzi, Michael Dare and Yousaf Mohamed all showing impressive technical skills and footwork along with the pace of Kyron Cooper, Fisher produced a twenty minute spell of very pleasing on the eye football. Mundle escaped down the left from Conor Darwish’s clip down the line but dragged his shot into the side netting and several dangerous low crosses did not find a Fisher player as Fisher looked to put themselves ahead.
However moving into the final quarter, they were caught out trying to play a little toom much in the wrong areas and with players pushing forward and allowed a Hullbridge striker to be fed in behind the back line whereupon he swept the ball past Amedu to give the visitors the lead once more. Amedu pulled off a good save to repel another Hullbridge attack and Fisher continued to press forward in numbers with Cooper linking up play well with some sweeping Crossfield passes sending in both wingers, but an equaliser did not come.
A good workout for both sides in a high tempo and well contested fair but physical game. The 96 in attendance will no doubt have been excited by the quality of the new Fisher players on show and manger Ajay Ashanike just needs to now ensure they show their range of skills in the right areas and develop the shape and structure of the side as the preseason preparations continue.
A Thursday night game in Dagenham against a May & Baker XI follows to give the rest of the squad some minutes, before a trip to play National League side Bromley’s under 23s.
