Kent Football United v Fisher Saturday 12 August: Match preview
Kent Football United v Fisher FC
Saturday 12 August 2017
3pm kick-off
SCEFL First Division
Glentworth Sports Club, Dartford
Today’s away fixture is the opening game of Fisher’s 2017-18 season. It also marks the start of us playing in a new division, with new teams to confront and new grounds to visit.
Last season was by any standards a bit of a rollercoaster for the club and the team. Adjusting to a new stadium in unfamiliar circumstances certainly took its toll. For the club, there was a lot to learn in a short space of time and it took us a while to settle in. This was to have an impact on the pitch as well.
The stresses and strains showed early on and we never really recovered enough momentum to keep us in the Premier division. But all due respect to the players and manager they never gave up, and what we saw as the season unfolded was a team gradually regaining their composure and confidence playing with passion and commitment eventually taking us to an end-of-season cliff hanger.
And the season ended with probably one of the best Fisher performances of the last decade – a truly magnificent 10-1 win which, if you were there, will live long in the memory. It says something about the character of the players that even though relegation loomed they never stopped playing their hearts out, never stopped fighting until the final whistle of the final game.
And it’s that fighting spirit we expect to see on show today down in Dartford. Last season’s key players return after a well deserved break, with Dean bringing in some new faces to bolster a strong starting squad.
But it won’t be an easy game by any means, opponents KFU already have two games under their belts – lost one at home and an away draw, so are definitely match-ready. How this will affect today’s game remains to be seen, but there is a sense in the Fisher camp that nothing is out of reach. A win today will set the tone for the rest of the season, and you can be sure Fisher’s army of travelling fans will be making all the noise whatever the outcome.
